Zcash Wallet: Which One to Choose in 2027

The best Zcash wallet in 2027 is one that supports Ironwood, the new shielded pool: on a phone that means Zodl (formerly Zashi), Edge or Unstoppable, on a computer Zingo! or Cake Wallet, and for a large amount Keystone paired with Zodl or Ledger with the Ledger Wallet app. Trezor, Exodus and Trust Wallet hold ZEC on transparent addresses only. Below is a comparison as of October 2026 and how to receive ZEC from an exchange or swap service without losing privacy.

Every wallet in the table is non-custodial: the keys are generated on your device, not by a company. According to the ZecHub list as of October 17, 2026, all of them are ready for Ironwood, the new Zcash shielded pool. That is the main thing to check when you pick a wallet in 2027.

What changed in 2026: Ironwood and the end of zcashd

If you chose a Zcash wallet a year ago, half of the advice you followed is out of date. Three big things happened on the network in 2026.

  • Ironwood instead of Orchard. On May 29 a vulnerability was found in the Orchard pool's scheme, and on July 28 the network upgraded to NU6.3, known as Ironwood. The Orchard pool is closed, and coins can only be withdrawn from it. u1 addresses stayed the same, but the protocol doesn't move the coins themselves: an updated wallet does that, either at the tap of a button or automatically. As of October 17, about 350,000 ZEC are still sitting in Orchard.
  • zcashd is switched off. The old node and wallet from the core team were shut down on July 18. The full node is now Zebra, and the wallet that goes with it is Zallet, which is still in beta.
  • Zashi became Zodl. In January 2026 the Electric Coin Company team left the company and founded ZODL, and on February 16 they announced that their wallet was being renamed to Zodl. If you had Zashi installed, nothing is lost: it is the same app under a new name.

NU7 is up next. On October 20, based on the testnet results, the final decision on the launch and the activation height will be made, with November 5 as the target date. Blocks will come every 25 seconds instead of 75, and coins in the oldest pool, Sprout, will become unspendable. We collected the details in our article on the Zcash NU7 upgrade and 25-second blocks.

What a Zcash wallet should do

  1. Keep the keys with you. The seed phrase is created on your device and never leaves it. ZEC on a centralized exchange is just a record in someone else's database. A no-KYC crypto exchange like VertEXchange doesn't hold coins either: it sends them straight to your address.
  2. Support Ironwood. A wallet without it can't keep coins shielded under the new rules. ZecHub maintains the list of ready wallets, so check it before you install anything.
  3. Offer a transparent address for receiving. Exchanges and swap services almost always send ZEC to a transparent t1 address. A good wallet shows that address next to the shielded one and then helps you hide the coins.
  4. Understand TEX. Binance accepts ZEC on a special tex1 address. A wallet can send shielded coins there only in two steps, through a one-time transparent address. Older wallets don't know the format and can't build the transaction.
  5. Get updates. Zcash changes its network rules every few months. A wallet that hasn't been updated for the new rules stops working with ZEC, and after Ironwood YWallet dropped Zcash altogether.

We explained in detail how all the address types differ in our guide to Zcash addresses: t1, z and unified.

Mobile wallets: Zodl, Edge and Unstoppable

Zodl is the wallet from the Zcash core developer team, formerly Zashi. It shows a unified u1 address right away and keeps coins shielded, while the transparent address for receiving from exchanges opens on the same screen. The seed phrase is 24 words, and Zodl shows the block height your wallet starts from on the backup screen. Write it down next to the phrase: with it, recovery takes minutes. Zodl moves coins from the old Orchard pool to Ironwood following its own guide.

Edge is a multi-currency wallet where ZEC is shielded by default. It's convenient if the same phone also holds bitcoin and stablecoins.

Unstoppable is another multi-currency wallet with Ironwood support. It suits people who want to keep many coins in one app instead of juggling several.

Phones get lost more often than computers, so keep only your spending money on one. Small swaps are a handy way to top up a mobile wallet, for example to buy Zcash with USDT TRC20 straight to the app's transparent address.

Desktop wallets: Zingo!, Cake Wallet and your own node

Zingo! runs on phones and computers, and advanced users get a command-line version too. It supports all current pools: transparent, Sapling and Ironwood.

Cake Wallet is known as a Monero wallet, but it holds Zcash as well. It moves coins from Orchard to Ironwood automatically: all you need to do is keep the synced wallet open. If you hold both XMR and ZEC, this lets you get by with a single app. Our roundup of the best Monero wallets covers it in more detail.

Your own node. If you'd rather not depend on someone else's servers, run a Zebra node with the Zallet wallet. This option is for enthusiasts: Zallet is still in beta, and the blockchain takes up a lot of disk space.

A separate note on YWallet: after Ironwood it no longer supports Zcash. The developer left only Ycash in it and suggests switching to his new wallet, Zkool. If your coins were in YWallet, restore the phrase in Zkool, Zodl, Zingo! or Cake Wallet and check the balance.

Hardware wallets: Keystone and Ledger

A hardware wallet keeps the keys on a separate device and signs transactions inside it. Even an infected computer can't get to the keys.

  • Keystone 3 Pro works without cables: transactions travel to the device and back as QR codes. It holds transparent and shielded ZEC in Ironwood and pairs with Zodl starting from firmware 2.0.2. Keystone does not support the Sapling pool. On October 8, Keystone published a guide on how to check on the device that a u1 address belongs to your wallet.
  • Ledger supports shielded ZEC in a dedicated app for Nano S Plus, Stax and Flex. The Nano X is not on that list. You can manage the coins right in the Ledger Wallet desktop app, and there's no mobile version yet.
  • Trezor, as of October 2026, holds ZEC on transparent addresses only and hasn't shipped support for shielded coins yet.

Buy devices only from the manufacturer. This fall, spy implants have already turned up in Ledger wallets from third-party sellers. We wrote about the Ledger with a spy chip from Ozon, a Russian online marketplace, and how to check your own device.

Where ZEC can only be transparent

Trezor, Exodus, Trust Wallet, Brave and most multi-currency wallets keep Zcash on transparent t1 addresses only. Transactions from them are visible on the blockchain just like bitcoin: amounts, addresses and the whole history. That works for storage, but it misses the whole point of Zcash.

If your coins sit in a wallet like that, move them to one of the Ironwood wallets and shield them. As of October 17, 2026, according to zkp.baby, about 29% of all ZEC is shielded, almost 5 million coins. The more coins there are in the pool, the harder it is to single out any one transaction.

How to receive ZEC from an exchange and shield it right away

  1. Open the receive screen in your wallet and switch to the transparent address (Transparent), which starts with t1.
  2. Enter that address on the exchange or swap service and wait for the deposit. A block comes out every 75 seconds on average, and every 25 seconds after NU7.
  3. Tap "Shield" in the wallet. The coins will move to Ironwood, and from then on your transactions are hidden.
  4. For the next top-up, take a fresh transparent address if your wallet supports it, so your deposits can't be linked to each other.

The way back works the same, but needs more care. Before withdrawing to an exchange, check which address it gives you: any wallet can send to a transparent t1 or t3, while only a wallet that understands TEX can send to tex1.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting a u1 or zs address where only transparent ones are accepted. The form will reject the address, and if it doesn't, the deposit can get stuck until support sorts it out.
  • Leaving coins in Orchard or Sprout. Coins in Orchard need to be moved to Ironwood, and Sprout will become unspendable after NU7.
  • Restoring a wallet without the block height. The wallet will scan the network from the very beginning, which takes hours.
  • Keeping the phrase in notes or a screenshot. Read our guide on how to store a seed phrase to do it right.
  • Installing a wallet from an ad link. Type the website address by hand and go to the app store through the link on the official site.

How to top up a Zcash wallet without a centralized exchange or registration

Many big exchanges don't list ZEC at all or only release it after identity verification. A swap is simpler: you send what you already have and get Zcash to your own address.

With VertEXchange you don't need an account, email or phone number for this. You pick a pair, paste your wallet's transparent address and see the rate and the amount you'll receive before you send anything. For ZEC the form accepts t1 and t3 addresses and verifies the checksum, so an address with a typo won't go through. The coins go straight to your address, and the service doesn't hold them.

  • A fixed rate holds for about 15 minutes while your transaction is being confirmed.
  • You can set a refund address where the coins will go back if the swap doesn't happen.
  • Personal fields of the order are deleted 24 hours after it completes, and your swap history is stored only in your browser.
  • Support chat is available on every page, and questions are handled by the swap code.

Once you get your ZEC, shield it in the wallet. Most people buy Zcash with bitcoin without registration, and litecoin holders can easily exchange LTC to ZEC.
