Crypto swap held for an AML check: why it happens and what to do

A crypto swap AML check is a manual review of where your coins came from, triggered when automated risk scoring links the sending address to sanctions, hacks, mixers or other risks. Your funds are not lost: the swap waits for a decision, then either continues or the coins go back to your refund address. Below is why it happens and what to do step by step.

What is an AML check in a crypto swap

AML (anti-money laundering) means rules against laundering money. For crypto services they are set by the FATF, the international anti-money laundering body: a platform that takes custody of client funds must assess risk and must not let through money with clear signs of crime.

In practice it works like this. Every incoming transfer is automatically scored by a blockchain analytics system. It looks not at you but at the history of the coins: where they came from, which addresses they passed through, and whether any of them belong to known hacker wallets, darknet markets or mixers. The result is a risk score. Low means the swap goes on with no human involved. High means the swap is paused and a person makes the call.

It matters where such a pause can happen. If a custodial platform holds the coins during the swap, its own rules let it stop the swap and ask for a review. If the swap is non-custodial and coins move from address to address, there is no one to stop them halfway. That is how a crypto exchange without AML works at VertEXchange: every popular pair has an option with no AML check, and the form shows it before you send any coins. Signing up and AML scoring are different things: a service with no account can still stop a swap if it holds the coins, a non-custodial one cannot.

Why was my crypto swap stopped for an AML check

Most often the reason is not you personally but where your coins had been before they reached you. Here are the main triggers.

Links to sanctioned addresses

Some addresses are on sanctions lists, such as the US OFAC list. If coins passed through such an address, even several hops back, the risk score goes up. Stablecoin issuers freeze addresses from those lists too: Tether has blocked wallets more than once, and we covered how Tether froze 550 million USDT linked to Iran.

Hacks and stolen funds

After a major hack, analytics firms tag the attacker addresses fast. The money is split across hundreds of wallets, and some of it can reach ordinary people through P2P trades or payments for services. Coins with that history will almost certainly trigger a review.

Mixers and darknet markets

Mixers blend the coins of many users to hide the link between sender and receiver. Analytics systems treat a direct exit from a mixer as high risk, along with links to darknet markets and illegal casinos.

Unusual amount or behavior

A large amount, a series of transfers that looks like structuring, or coins that just arrived from a freshly created address can also trigger a review. None of that is a crime by itself, but the system cannot read intentions and sends such cases to people.

How to tell an AML review from a normal delay

Not every delay means an AML check. On our exchange page these cases have separate states, so you do not have to guess:

What is happeningHow it showsWhat to do
The network is still confirmingstatus waiting for network confirmationswait, check the transaction by its hash
The swap is under manual reviewreview status, sometimes with a reasoncontact support with your exchange code
A refund is in progressrefund status, then the refund transaction hashwait for the coins at your refund address
The deposit window expiredthe deposit address is removed from the pagecreate a new exchange

If a reason for the review is given, the exchange page shows it in your language. We explained why a transaction can hang even before the swap in our guide on what to do when a crypto transaction is stuck pending.

What to do if your swap is held for review

Calmly and in order:

  1. Save your exchange code. Support finds the operation by it; with no account, it is the only key to your swap.
  2. Write to the support chat. It is on every page. Give the exchange code and describe the situation briefly, without opening a new ticket every half hour.
  3. Prepare an explanation of the source of funds. Where the coins came from: an exchange withdrawal, payment for work, a P2P purchase. Transaction hashes, withdrawal screenshots and trade chats help.
  4. Check your refund address. If the swap does not continue, the coins return to the refund address. Make sure it is yours and that you can access it.
  5. Do not send more coins to the same exchange. A second transfer will not speed up the review, it only makes it harder.

No one can honestly name the review time in advance: people make the decision, and it depends on the amount and the coin history. If the platform asks for documents, that is its requirement, not ours: VertEXchange never collects your name, email, phone or documents and cannot hand them over.

What not to do

A pause is frustrating, and that is when it is easy to make things worse:

  • do not pay "unlock specialists" who message you first: they are scammers;
  • do not run the same coins through a chain of wallets and send them again, it looks like hiding tracks and almost guarantees another review;
  • do not invent a story about the source of funds: a mismatch with the blockchain is visible at once.

We give no advice on getting around an AML check and do not recommend looking for it. The honest path is shorter: explain where the money came from or get it back to your refund address.

How to lower the risk of an AML check next time

You cannot rule out a review completely, but many holds can be prevented:

  • Do not accept coins from strangers without need. A P2P trade with an unknown seller is the most common way tainted coins reach honest people.
  • Use a fresh receiving address. A new address in your wallet does not mix new deposits with old history and spam.
  • Do not mix coins from different sources on one address before a swap if you are not sure about each of them.
  • Keep your receipts. Exchange withdrawal hashes and trade records take seconds to save and spare you a long search if a review does happen.
  • Read the form before sending. The type of direction and the estimated chance of a review sit next to the rate, so you learn about a possible check beforehand, not after the transfer.

For example, if you withdraw ether from a large exchange to your own wallet and want to exchange ETH to BTC, the history of those coins is usually clear: you already have the withdrawal record.

How to swap crypto without registration and with clear rules

With VertEXchange a swap starts with no account, email or phone: you pick a pair, paste your wallet address and a refund address. Before sending you see the rate, the final amount and whether the direction may be reviewed. You decide, knowing everything in advance.

The reasons are simple and easy to verify:

  • the rate and amount are visible before sending, and a fixed rate holds for about 15 minutes;
  • coins go straight to your address, the service does not hold them;
  • if the swap does not go through, coins return to your refund address;
  • personal fields of an operation are deleted 24 hours after it completes, and your swap history lives only in your browser;
  • the support chat is on every page and works by exchange code.

Stablecoins are what people swap most here: you can buy bitcoin with USDT TRC20 or convert USDT TRC20 to USDC on Ethereum, seeing everything that affects the swap in advance.

FAQ

Why was my crypto swap flagged for an AML check?

Automated risk scoring found links in your coins' history to sanctioned addresses, hacks or mixers, or saw an unusual amount. It is a check of the coins, not an accusation against you.

How long does an AML review of a swap take?

No one can name a time in advance: people make the decision, and it depends on the amount and coin history. A quick reply to support with your exchange code and source of funds helps.

Will I lose my money if the review fails?

Usually not: if the swap does not continue, the coins go back to your refund address. That is why the refund address must be one you control.

Do I have to show my passport?

We do not collect documents. The platform that received the coins may ask for a review under its own rules; whether to agree or wait for a refund is up to you.

Can I cancel a swap that is under review?

A blockchain transfer cannot be reversed. Contact support with your exchange code: if the swap does not continue, the coins are returned to your refund address.

How do I avoid an AML hold next time?

Do not accept coins from strangers, use a fresh address, keep exchange withdrawal records and check the estimated chance of a review in the form before sending.
