How to Buy Zcash (ZEC) Without KYC or an Exchange: A Step-by-Step Guide for 2027
Zcash is up more than twentyfold in a year, yet buying it on a big exchange has only gotten harder: some platforms have already delisted ZEC, others keep it under a risk label. On top of that, the network went through the Ironwood upgrade this summer, and half of the old guides are now out of date. Here is how to buy ZEC with bitcoin, USDT or ether without signing up, which wallet to install today, which address to enter and how to move your coins into the shielded pool.

Why Zcash is hard to buy on an exchange
Zcash is a coin built for private payments: a shielded transaction hides the sender, the receiver and the amount. Regulators don't like that, and for years exchanges have kept removing ZEC and bringing it back:
- OKX delisted ZEC in January 2024 and only relisted it in November 2025.
- Binance put a monitoring tag on ZEC in 2024 and in April 2025 put it up for a delisting vote. The coin stayed, but the risk label is still there.
- Kraken finished delisting ZEC for customers in the UAE in September 2026.
- In the European Union, starting July 10, 2027, exchanges and crypto service providers will be banned from handling privacy coins. Nobody is banning individuals from holding these coins themselves.
By the end of 2025, 73 exchanges had delisted at least one privacy coin. And where ZEC is still traded, you need full verification, and withdrawals often go only to a transparent address.
That's why the easiest route right now isn't a centralized exchange but a no-KYC crypto exchange that swaps one coin for another straight into your own wallet. No sign-up, and the coins land directly with you.
What kinds of Zcash addresses exist
Before you install a wallet, it's worth sorting out the addresses, or you can get lost at the very first step.
| Address | Starts with | What the blockchain shows |
|---|---|---|
| Transparent | t1 or t3 | everything, just like bitcoin: addresses and amount |
| Shielded Sapling | zs | only that a transaction happened, plus the fee |
| Unified | u1 | depends on where the wallet sends the coins; usually into the shielded pool |
| TEX | tex | a transparent address that only accepts coins from transparent addresses |
A unified address (u1) packs several addresses into one string: a shielded one and a transparent one. The sender's wallet picks the most private option it supports on its own.
TEX addresses were added at the request of exchanges: Binance issues one for ZEC deposits so it doesn't receive coins directly from the shielded pool. A modern wallet handles such a transfer in two steps through a one-time transparent address.
What the Ironwood upgrade changed
On July 28, 2026, the Zcash network activated the Ironwood upgrade. The old Orchard shielded pool was sealed: you can only move coins out of it, and new shielded coins go into the Ironwood pool. User addresses stayed the same, and old u1 addresses still work. But your wallet has to support Ironwood, otherwise it can't send shielded coins.
Step 1. Install a Zcash wallet
The main rule: the wallet must support shielded ZEC and the Ironwood upgrade. As of September 2026, your options are:
| Wallet | Platforms | Shielded ZEC |
|---|---|---|
| Zodl (formerly Zashi) | iOS, Android | yes, by default, traffic over Tor |
| Zingo | iOS, Android, desktop | yes, plus a transparent address for deposits |
| Cake Wallet | iOS, Android, desktop | yes, by default, with Monero and bitcoin alongside |
| Keystone | hardware, paired with Zodl | yes, with Ironwood |
| Ledger | hardware, desktop app | yes, in the Ironwood pool; not in the mobile app yet |
| Trezor, Trust Wallet, Exodus | various | no, transparent addresses only |
What to avoid: YWallet no longer supports Zcash after Ironwood; its developer switched it to Ycash only. If you have coins in YWallet or in the old Orchard pool, restore your seed phrase in a wallet that supports Ironwood and move the coins.
When you create the wallet, write the seed phrase down on paper or metal and never keep it in photos or notes. We covered why that matters and how to store a seed phrase so you don't lose your coins in a separate article. Zcash wallets have one more detail: write down the block height or the date the wallet was created (the birthday). With it, a restore takes minutes instead of hours.
Step 2. Copy your transparent address
To receive ZEC in a swap on VertEXchange, you need a transparent address starting with t1 or t3. The exchange form checks the address and won't accept zs, u1 or tex.
Where to find a transparent address:
- Zodl: the Receive screen, toggle to the transparent address (Transparent). Zodl is the most convenient wallet for this step: it will offer to shield incoming coins on its own.
- Other wallets: the receive screen, the option with the transparent address (Transparent or t-address).
- Hardware wallet: the transparent address is shown in the app you use to manage it.
Don't worry: the transparent address is only needed on the way in. In the next step you'll move the coins into the shielded pool, and from then on they won't be visible.
Step 3. Swap your coin for ZEC
- Choose what you're sending. Most people buy Zcash with bitcoin, but other coins work too, such as USDT TRC20 or ETH.
- Enter the amount: the form instantly shows how much ZEC you'll get.
- Pick the rate type. A floating rate is usually better, a fixed rate guarantees the amount. The difference and which rate to choose for a crypto swap are covered in a separate article.
- Paste your transparent ZEC address and a refund address for the coin you're sending.
- Send the coins to the address shown on the exchange page. Send exactly the amount, on exactly the network, listed there.
- Wait for the payout: the ZEC arrives at your address, and you can follow the status on the exchange page.
No account or email needed. The exchange page is your receipt, so save the link to it.
Step 4. Shield your coins
The coins have arrived at your transparent address, and for now they're visible on the blockchain. Move them into the shielded pool:
- Zodl shows your transparent balance and a Shield button on its own. Tap it, and the coins go into the shielded pool.
- In a wallet without such a button, send the coins to your own unified u1 address: the wallet will put them into the shielded pool.
- Check the result: your transparent balance should drop to zero, and the coins should show up in your shielded balance.
The Zcash network fee starts at 0.0001 ZEC for a simple transfer, about $0.14 at the Sep 29 price. Once the coins are shielded, further transfers between shielded addresses hide the sender, the receiver and the amount.
How long it takes
A new block on the Zcash network comes out every 75 seconds on average. Exchange services and exchanges wait for 10 to 24 confirmations, which is roughly 12 to 30 minutes. Exchanges credit ZEC deposits in 20-150 minutes.
The NU7 upgrade is scheduled for November 5, 2026, after which a block will come out every 25 seconds. That date is still a target: the final decision is expected on October 20.
Common mistakes
- The exchange won't accept a u1 address. Most exchanges only withdraw ZEC to transparent addresses. Withdraw to a t1 address, then shield the coins in your wallet.
- Shielded coins sent to a Binance TEX address. Send with a wallet that understands TEX addresses, such as Zodl: it will route the transfer through a one-time transparent address.
- Counting on a transparent address for privacy. A transfer from a transparent address to a shielded one only hides the shielded side. The transparent side is visible to everyone.
- An old wallet after Ironwood. If your wallet hasn't been updated since summer, it may fail to send shielded coins. Update it or restore your seed phrase in Zodl, Zingo or Cake Wallet.
- The wrong network on withdrawal. Real ZEC lives only on the Zcash network. Wrapped ZEC tokens on other chains aren't Zcash coins, and you can't send them to a t1 address.
How to cash out ZEC
Getting out of ZEC is as easy as getting in: on the pair page you can sell ZEC for USDT on TRON, or swap it for Monero if you'd rather hold another privacy coin. When you send from a shielded address, the wallet handles the transfer to the exchange address on its own.
After its rally, the ZEC price is still volatile: overnight on Sep 29 the coin dropped 12% on liquidations and was trading around $1,400 by the evening. Buy only an amount whose swings you can live with.
FAQ
Can I buy Zcash without KYC?
Yes. A crypto-to-crypto swap without sign-up needs no verification: you send your coins and receive ZEC at your own address.
Which address should I use to receive ZEC?
A transparent one, starting with t1 or t3. Zodl and other Zcash wallets show it on the receive screen. Once the coins arrive, shield them.
What is the best Zcash wallet in 2027?
On a phone, Zodl (formerly Zashi): it shields by default and supports Ironwood. If you also hold Monero and bitcoin, Cake Wallet is the usual pick. For large amounts, a Keystone hardware wallet or a Ledger with the desktop app.
What happened to YWallet?
After the Ironwood upgrade, YWallet no longer supports Zcash. Restore your seed phrase in a wallet that supports Ironwood.
Is it legal to buy Zcash?
In most countries, owning ZEC is legal. Even the new EU ban starting in 2027 targets exchanges and crypto service providers, not people who hold coins themselves. Taxes on crypto income are paid under the laws of your country.
How long does a ZEC transfer take?
A block comes out every 75 seconds, and services wait for 10-24 confirmations, which is 12-30 minutes.
Swap BTC, USDT, ETH or another coin for ZEC: the coins go straight to your Zcash address.
