USDT on different networks: how TRC20, ERC20, BEP20, Solana and TON differ and which one to choose

USDT is one token, but it exists on a dozen networks. The network decides the fee, the speed and whether your money arrives at all: sending to the wrong network is the most common expensive mistake. Here is how to pick a network and what to do if your USDT is on the wrong one.

EthereumERC20usually a few dollars, more at peaksETH
BNB Smart ChainBEP20centsBNB
SolanaSPLa fraction of a centSOL
TONTONcentsTON

These are rough figures as of late September 2026: fees depend on network load and the price of each network's coin. On the TRON network, a transfer is cheaper if you rent "energy" in advance, and more expensive if the recipient has never held USDT before.

How to choose a network

  • The recipient's wallet decides. Send on the network that the recipient's wallet or exchange supports. A TRON address starts with "T", while Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain addresses both start with "0x" and look the same, so they are easy to mix up.
  • You need the network's coin for the fee. To send USDT on TRC20, you need TRX in your wallet; on ERC20 — ETH; on Solana — SOL. If you don't have the fee coin, you can get it with a swap at VertEXchange, straight to your own wallet.
  • Avoid Ethereum for small amounts. A fee of a few dollars eats a noticeable chunk of a $50 transfer.
  • TRC20 is one of the most popular networks for transfers. Almost every wallet, exchange service and P2P platform supports it.

The main mistake: sending to the wrong network

If you send USDT on BNB Smart Chain to an exchange address that only accepts it on Ethereum, the money will not reach your balance. Only the exchange's support can return it — and not always.

The rule is simple: the sending network must match the receiving network. Before a large transfer, send a small test amount.

If your USDT is on the wrong network

You can move USDT from one network to another with a swap. If your coins are on Ethereum and the recipient expects TRON, you can exchange USDT ERC20 to TRC20; the reverse swap and moving USDT off BEP20 work the same way. You send USDT on one network and receive it on another, to your own address and without signing up with VertEXchange.

Need bitcoin rather than USDT? You can exchange USDT TRC20 to bitcoin right away and receive BTC in your own wallet.
