Mantle (MNT) is the coin of the Mantle network, an L2 on top of Ethereum: there MNT pays the gas for every transaction, while on Ethereum itself it circulates as an ERC-20 token. The network grew out of BitDAO, and in 2023 the old BIT token was swapped for MNT one to one.

MNT is most often swapped to get gas for the Mantle network: without it, no transaction leaves a Mantle wallet, not even a transfer of stablecoins or ETH.

Here MNT is exchanged on two networks, and they are different assets. On the Mantle network MNT is the native coin used to pay the fee for every transaction. On Ethereum MNT is an ERC-20 token with the contract 0x3c3a81e81dc49a522a592e7622a7e711c06bf354, and its transfer fee is paid in ETH. MNT sent on one network will not show up on the other.

Addresses are the same on both networks: 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters, 42 in total. A wallet such as MetaMask receives MNT on Mantle and on Ethereum at the same address, but shows the balance only for the selected network: if the MNT are not visible, switch networks. That does not work with an exchange — if it expects MNT on Mantle and an ERC-20 transfer arrives on Ethereum, the deposit will not be credited automatically.

On Mantle gas is paid in MNT, and ETH there is an ordinary token. So a new Mantle wallet needs MNT first: without it you cannot send ETH, USDT or any other token.

A Mantle block comes every 2 seconds, and an MNT transfer arrives within seconds. An Ethereum block comes every 12 seconds, and crediting takes minutes. Moving MNT from Mantle to Ethereum through the official bridge takes hours: the withdrawal waits until the Mantle state is confirmed on Ethereum.

Neither network uses a memo: a wallet and an exchange both need only the address and the right network.

With MNT itself: it is Mantle's gas. ETH on Mantle is an ordinary token and cannot pay fees. If a Mantle wallet holds no MNT, no tokens can be sent from it.
