Morpho is a lending protocol: users deposit assets into vaults to earn interest or borrow on isolated markets, each with one collateral asset and one loan asset. MORPHO is the protocol's governance token; it has been transferable since November 21, 2024.

MORPHO often comes as a reward for deposits and loans in the protocol and is then swapped — on Ethereum or on Base, depending on where the rewards arrived.

MORPHO has two contracts on Ethereum. The current token is 0x58d97b57bb95320f9a05dc918aef65434969c2b2. The old legacy MORPHO (0x9994e35db50125e0df82e4c2dde62496ce330999) cannot be transferred at all — by design, so that nobody sends it to an exchange by mistake. Legacy tokens are converted 1:1 into the current ones through a wrapper contract: the Morpho app has a Wrap button for it. The wrapper works only on Ethereum.

On Base, MORPHO is a separate token with its own contract, 0xbaa5cc21fd487b8fcc2f632f3f4e8d37262a0842; it needs no wrapping. The recipient address on Ethereum and Base is the same — 0x and 42 characters — so pick the network on which the recipient's wallet or exchange expects the token: MORPHO sent on Base will not show up in an Ethereum balance.

On both Ethereum and Base the fee is paid in ETH, but these are different ETH: ether on Ethereum will not pay for a transfer on Base, and vice versa. The wallet needs ETH on the same network where the MORPHO sits. A Base block comes every 2 seconds, an Ethereum block every 12 seconds.

Shares in Morpho vaults are separate tokens with names like steakUSDC or gtWETH: they are a deposit in another asset, not MORPHO. MORPHO rewards for deposits must first be claimed in the app — only then do they appear in the wallet and become sendable.

A wallet address on the network chosen in the form: on both Ethereum and Base it is a 42-character address starting with 0x. The address is the same on both networks, so check where the recipient expects MORPHO; if the form is set to another network, you need an address on that network.

A Base block comes every 2 seconds, so a transfer confirms almost at once; an Ethereum block comes every 12 seconds, and confirmations take a few minutes. The rest depends on the selected route.

Legacy MORPHO cannot be transferred, so it cannot be swapped. Wrap it 1:1 into current MORPHO in the Morpho app (the Wrap button) or through the wrapper contract on Ethereum — after that the token can be sent.

ETH on the Base network. Ether on Ethereum cannot pay fees on Base, even though the wallet address is the same on both networks.
