Pepe (PEPE) is a meme token on Ethereum based on Pepe the Frog, launched in April 2023. It has no transfer tax and no claimed utility: its creators describe it plainly as a pure memecoin.

PEPE was issued only on Ethereum, so it is often swapped to and from coins of other networks: that is how the token gets into an Ethereum wallet or leaves it without a bridge or an exchange.

Genuine PEPE is an ERC-20 token at contract 0x6982508145454ce325ddbe47a25d4ec3d2311933. The meme was copied fast: Ethereum and other networks host dozens of tokens with the PEPE ticker or similar names — PEPE 2.0, BabyPepe and the like. A wallet shows them all the same way, so when adding the token by hand, take the contract address from a block explorer, not from a link in a chat or a comment.

The PEPE contract has no transfer tax: the recipient gets exactly the amount sent, and the sender pays the network fee separately, in ETH. Many copies have a built-in tax that deducts part of the tokens on every transfer. If less arrived than was sent, it is most likely not the right PEPE.

The recipient address is a regular Ethereum address: 0x and 42 characters. To move PEPE on later, the wallet needs ETH, and for small amounts the network fee can be a noticeable share of the transfer. An Ethereum block comes every 12 seconds; recipients usually wait for a dozen or more confirmations, which is a few minutes.

PEPE on BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum and other networks is either a bridged copy or an unrelated project with the same ticker. The 0x address on those networks is the same as on Ethereum, so the wallet will not flag a mistake: before sending, make sure the Ethereum network is selected.
