How to convert bitcoin to ethereum: step by step

The simplest way to convert bitcoin to ethereum without an exchange account is a no-registration swap service: you send BTC from your own wallet and ETH arrives straight at your 0x address on Ethereum. Below: the methods compared, the swap step by step, address checks, bitcoin confirmations, gas and the mistakes that cost people money.

What you need to swap BTC for ETH

Bitcoin and ether live on different blockchains, so you can't send one straight into the other from your wallet. Someone has to receive your BTC on the Bitcoin network and send ETH on Ethereum. That can be an exchange, a swap service or a decentralized protocol, and the choice decides whether you need an account, where your coins end up and how many steps it takes.

As of October 6, 2026, Yahoo Finance shows bitcoin at about $85,600 and ether at about $2,700. That puts one BTC at roughly 31–32 ETH before fees. The exact figure comes from the exchange form when you create the order, because the rate moves every minute.

You need three things: bitcoin in a wallet you control, an Ethereum address to receive ether, and a little patience while the Bitcoin network confirms your transfer. If you have them, you can exchange BTC to ETH without registration right away. Below we compare the methods and cover the mistakes people make most often.

Ways to convert bitcoin to ethereum compared

The main difference between the methods is who holds your coins during the swap and what you get at the end: real ETH at your own address or a number on someone else's balance sheet.

No-registration swap service

The shortest path for people who hold their own keys. You pick the pair, paste your ether address, send bitcoin to the deposit address and receive ETH in your own wallet. A good crypto exchange of this kind shows the rate and the final amount before you send and doesn't ask for documents. The one downside: you check the address and network yourself, and nobody can undo a mistake.

Exchange with KYC

On a centralized exchange you first deposit BTC to your account, then sell it for ETH directly or through a stablecoin, and withdraw ether to your wallet. That requires an account with identity verification. While your coins sit on the exchange, the platform controls them: it can delay withdrawals, ask for proof of funds or close the account. If you already trade there, it's convenient. For a one-off swap it's a lot of steps.

DEXs, bridges and wrapped bitcoin

A regular DEX on Ethereum can't see real bitcoin: it swaps tokens within a single network. To get there with BTC, people use wrapped tokens pegged one to one to bitcoin:

  • WBTC. The oldest option. The bitcoin sits with licensed custodians, and only vetted institutions can mint and burn the token.
  • cbBTC. Coinbase's token, backed by bitcoin in Coinbase custody, live on Ethereum and Base.
  • tBTC. The Threshold network's decentralized bridge: BTC deposits are guarded by a randomly selected group of operators who can only act by majority.

All three share one weakness: the token is worth exactly as much as the custodian's or bridge's promise. Bridges are a regular target of large hacks. Some cross-chain protocols swap native BTC for ETH without wrapping, but you need a wallet that supports both networks and an understanding of how their pools work. If the goal is simply to get ether for bitcoin, wrappers and bridges add risk without adding value.

How to convert bitcoin to ethereum step by step

Here is the order using our form as an example. Other services work similarly, only the field names differ.

  1. Pick the pair. In "You send" choose BTC, in "You receive" choose ETH on the Ethereum network.
  2. Enter the amount. The limits are shown under the field, and the form instantly calculates how much ether you'll receive. Amounts below the minimum won't go through.
  3. Choose the rate type. "Floating" is set at the moment the service receives your bitcoin. "Fixed" locks the amount for the sending window. Some pairs offer only one type.
  4. Paste your ETH address. The field reads "ETH receiving address on Ethereum." The form checks the format and the checksum, so an address with a typo won't pass. You can pick saved addresses from the address book, which is stored only in your browser.
  5. Add a refund address if the form asks for one. This is your bitcoin address. Some exchange options require it: if the swap doesn't happen, the BTC goes back there.
  6. Click "Exchange" and send BTC. The service gives you a deposit address. Send exactly the amount in the order, on the Bitcoin network.
  7. Follow the stages. The exchange page shows "Send", "Confirmation", "Exchange" and "Done". Save the exchange code: it opens the page from any device and it's what you give support.

When the ether is sent, the transaction hash appears on the page. You can look it up in an Ethereum block explorer; blocks on that network come roughly every 12 seconds.

Ethereum address: how not to get it wrong

An ether address starts with 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters: digits and the letters a to f. Any wallet that supports Ethereum gives you one.

The letters in an address are often in mixed case, for example 0x5aAeb6… That's the built-in checksum from the EIP-55 standard. The case of each letter is derived from a hash of the address, and if you get one character wrong, the check will almost certainly fail: the standard's authors estimate a random typo slips through about 0.025% of the time. An all-lowercase address is also valid, just without this protection.

What else matters:

  • One address for ETH and tokens. Ether and every ERC-20 token arrive at the same 0x address. You don't need a separate address for ether.
  • Same format on other networks. BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Base and other EVM networks use the same 0x addresses. That's why you need to choose ETH on the Ethereum network in the form if that's where your wallet expects it.
  • Check exchange addresses separately. If you want ETH to land on an exchange, first see in its deposit section which networks it accepts for that address. A transfer on an unsupported network may never be credited.
  • Domains won't work. The form doesn't accept names like name.eth: you need the wallet address itself.

Why the swap waits for bitcoin confirmations

The service starts the swap once your transfer has arrived and collected enough confirmations. A confirmation is a new block on top of the block with your transaction. On Bitcoin a block comes every 10 minutes on average, but the interval is random: the next one may arrive in a minute or in half an hour. Bitcoin.org recommends waiting for six confirmations for large transfers; how many a given service waits for depends on its settings and the amount.

While the transfer is in flight, the exchange page says "Waiting for network confirmations." If the transaction went out with a low fee, it can get stuck in the miners' queue. How to check and speed it up is covered in our guide on why a crypto transaction is stuck pending. How the network works and what the coin is worth right now is on the page where you can check the bitcoin price and its networks.

Ethereum gas: what to know after the swap

You don't pay anything to receive ether: gas is paid by the sender, and in a swap the service sends. You'll need gas later, when you move ETH or tokens yourself. Ethereum fees are paid only in ETH, so keep a little ether on the address, especially if it holds ERC-20 tokens: without ETH you can't move them.

Gas prices are about to change. The Glamsterdam upgrade goes live on the Sepolia testnet on October 6, 2026, and no mainnet date has been set yet. According to ethereum.org, a simple ETH transfer to an existing address will cost up to 71% less gas after the upgrade, while creating new accounts will get more expensive. We covered the timeline and risks in detail in our breakdown of what Glamsterdam changes for ETH holders.

Fixed or floating rate

A floating rate is usually better, but the result can shift with the market while your bitcoin gathers confirmations. A fixed rate promises exactly the amount shown if you send the precise amount of BTC within the window, usually about 15 minutes. It costs more and isn't available for every pair.

With bitcoin that window matters. If your transfer gets stuck in the mempool and arrives after the order time has expired, the swap stops and the BTC goes back to the refund address. So for a fixed rate, set a fee with some margin. How to choose the type for your pair is covered in the article on fixed vs floating rate in crypto exchange.

Common mistakes when swapping BTC to ETH

  • Address on the wrong network. You pasted a 0x address, but the wallet expects ether on Arbitrum or BNB Smart Chain. Check which network your wallet shows the balance on.
  • Address from the clipboard. Clipper malware swaps a copied address for its own. Compare the first and last 5–6 characters with your wallet.
  • Wrong amount with a fixed rate. The exchange withheld a withdrawal fee and less arrived than the order said. Send BTC from your own wallet or account for the withdrawal fee.
  • Bitcoin fee too low. The transfer hangs for hours and the fixed rate expires.
  • A second transfer "just in case". One order takes one transfer. The extra one has to be refunded.
  • Zero ETH on an address with tokens. You received ether, swapped all of it into tokens, and have no gas left to move them.

Where to exchange BTC to ETH without registration

At VertEXchange a bitcoin to ether swap starts without an account, email or phone number: all you need is the pair, the amount and your wallet address. The rate and final amount are visible before you send, and a fixed rate holds for about 15 minutes. Ether goes straight to your address: the service doesn't hold your coins.

  • Refund address. If the swap doesn't go through, your bitcoin goes back there.
  • No data piling up. Personal fields of the operation are erased 24 hours after completion, and your exchange history is stored only in your browser.
  • Support on every page. If a transfer is delayed, write in the chat with your exchange code.

If your stablecoins are on TRON, you can just as easily buy ETH with USDT TRC20 in one order, without an exchange account, and if they already sit on Ethereum, you can swap USDT ERC20 to ETH without registration.

How to convert ethereum back to bitcoin

The way back works the same, only the networks swap places. You send ETH on Ethereum and receive BTC at an address starting with bc1, 3 or 1. Sending ether costs gas, so keep a little ETH on top of the swap amount. Confirmations are faster here because Ethereum blocks come more often. When you're ready, simply swap ETH back to BTC and paste your bitcoin address.

FAQ

Can I convert bitcoin to ethereum without registration?

Yes. With a no-registration swap service you send BTC and get ETH straight to your own address. No account, email or documents needed.

How much ETH will I get for one bitcoin?

As of October 6, 2026, according to Yahoo Finance, one BTC is worth roughly 31–32 ETH before fees. The exchange form shows the exact amount before you send.

How long does a BTC to ETH swap take?

Most of the time goes to bitcoin confirmations: a block comes every 10 minutes on average. After that the ether is sent, and Ethereum blocks come roughly every 12 seconds.

Which address do I use to receive ether?

An Ethereum address: 0x plus 40 hexadecimal characters. An address from MetaMask, Trust Wallet or any other Ethereum wallet where you hold the seed phrase will do.

Can I send ether straight to an exchange address?

Yes, if the exchange accepts ETH on the Ethereum network at that address. Check its deposit section before the swap.

Do I need ETH to receive ether?

No, the service pays the gas for sending. You'll need ETH on the address later, when you move ether or tokens yourself.

What is WBTC and how is it different from bitcoin?

WBTC is a token on Ethereum backed by bitcoin held by custodians. It isn't native bitcoin: its value rests on the custodian's promise, and you can't send it to a bitcoin address.
