USDT TRC20 fee and TRON energy: how much a transfer costs
USDT on TRON is known as the cheapest way to move dollars, yet many people only learn about the fee when their wallet says "insufficient energy" or burns TRX nobody warned them about. Here is what a USDT TRC20 transfer fee is made of, why you cannot send USDT without TRX in your balance and how to pay less.

Why you need TRX to send USDT
USDT on TRON is a TRC20 token, which means it is a smart contract. Every operation with it consumes network resources, and those are paid only in TRX, TRON's native coin. USDT itself does not go toward the fee. That is why a wallet holding only USDT cannot send it: you need at least a small TRX reserve.
Receiving USDT TRC20 is free: the sender pays the fee. If you are receiving stablecoins to your own wallet, you do not need TRX for that.
Energy and bandwidth
TRON has two kinds of resources, and a USDT transfer uses both.
- Energy pays for smart contract execution. Sending USDT to an address that already holds USDT usually takes about 65,000 energy. If the recipient has never held USDT, the contract has to create a new record, and the cost rises to roughly 130,000.
- Bandwidth pays for the size of the transaction, about 345 bytes per transfer. Every address gets 600 free units a day, but if you have already sent something today, that allowance may be used up.
If you have no resources of your own, the network burns TRX at the current price. Since late August 2025 one unit of energy costs 100 sun (1 TRX = 1,000,000 sun); before the vote on proposal #104 the price was 210 sun.
How much a transfer costs in 2026
If you pay by burning TRX, the numbers look like this:
| Situation | Energy | TRX burned |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient already holds USDT | about 65,000 | about 6.5 |
| Recipient has never held USDT | about 130,000 | about 13 |
| Bandwidth above the free allowance | — | about 0.35 |
In dollars that is usually $2 to $4.50 per transfer, depending on the TRX price. Your wallet shows the exact amount before you sign, and network parameters can be checked in the TronScan explorer.
This explains a common surprise: the first transfer to a new address costs twice as much as the usual transfers to a familiar one. It is not a wallet bug but the price of creating a record for a new recipient.
How to pay less
- Stake TRX. On TRON you can freeze TRX and receive energy and bandwidth every day in return. If you send often, this is the cheapest path: you will hardly burn any TRX. The downside is that you need a noticeable amount of TRX, and unfrozen coins do not come back instantly.
- Rent energy. There are services where you borrow energy for a short time. It is usually cheaper than burning, but such a service is an intermediary, so choose carefully.
- Batch transfers. Each transfer pays separately, so ten small transfers cost ten times as much as one large one.
- Compare networks. For small amounts, sending USDT on another network may be cheaper. We covered how to choose between TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20 in which USDT network to choose.
If your wallet has no TRX at all, the easiest fix is to top it up separately: for example, exchange bitcoin to TRX straight to your TRON address and then send your USDT.
Why exchange fees are different
Exchanges and custodial wallets charge a fixed fee for USDT TRC20 withdrawals that does not match the real cost of energy. Internally they move coins from their own addresses and decide for themselves how much to charge the customer. That is why one platform may charge 1 USDT per withdrawal and another noticeably more, on the very same network.
If you would rather not keep stablecoins on a platform, you can use a crypto exchange without registration: coins arrive straight in your wallet, not in an account.
How to swap USDT TRC20 without registration
VertEXchange needs no account, email or phone number. You pick a pair, for example to buy bitcoin with USDT TRC20, paste your wallet address and see the rate and the amount you will receive before you send anything. Your wallet pays the TRON network fee for sending, and coins arrive straight at your address: VertEXchange does not hold them.
- A fixed rate is held for about 15 minutes, so the amount will not drift while your transfer confirms.
- You can set a refund address: coins go back there if the exchange does not go through.
- Personal fields of an operation are deleted 24 hours after it completes, and your exchange history stays only in your browser.
- Support chat is on every page and works by exchange code.
Tired of energy and TRX? You can keep dollars on another network too: convert USDT TRC20 to BEP20 in a single swap.
FAQ
How much TRX do I need to send USDT TRC20?
Without your own energy, about 6.5 TRX per transfer to an address that already holds USDT and about 13 TRX to a new address. Plus up to 0.35 TRX for bandwidth if the free daily allowance is used up. Keep a small buffer on top.
Can I pay the fee in USDT?
Not on the TRON network itself: resources are paid only in TRX. Some wallets and services offer to pay in USDT, but that is their own service on top of the network.
Why is a transfer to a new address more expensive?
If the recipient has never held USDT, the contract has to create a new record for them. That takes roughly twice as much energy.
Do I need TRX to receive USDT TRC20?
No. The sender pays the fee, and you can receive USDT to an empty address.
What does "insufficient energy" mean?
The address has neither its own energy nor TRX to pay for it. Top up your wallet with TRX or stake TRX, and the transfer will go through.
No email, no account: enter your wallet address, send your coins and get the new ones straight to it.
