Ethena (ENA) is the governance token of Ethena, the protocol that issues the synthetic dollar USDe. ENA holders vote on protocol parameters and can stake the token, receiving sENA in return.
ENA is usually swapped to move tokens from an exchange to your own Ethereum wallet — for staking, say — or to turn ENA earned as ecosystem rewards into another coin.
ENA is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, contract 0x57e114b691db790c35207b2e685d4a43181e6061. Any regular Ethereum address works for receiving it: 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters, 42 in total. Letter case does not matter: the mix of upper and lower case is a checksum that helps catch typos.
The Ethena protocol has several tokens, and people often confuse them. ENA is the governance token, USDe is the synthetic dollar, sUSDe is staked USDe and sENA is staked ENA. They are separate contracts: sENA cannot be sent in place of ENA. To get ENA back, you have to unstake, and after the withdrawal request there is a 7-day cooldown.
Through bridges, ENA also exists on other networks, including L2s that use the same 0x addresses. So a network mistake is invisible at a glance. Tokens sent to your own wallet are not lost: ENA on Ethereum show up once you switch the wallet to that network. If an exchange expects ENA on another network, though, a deposit can be recovered only through its support, and not always.
The fee for an ENA transfer is paid in ETH. In a new wallet with no ETH, incoming ENA cannot be sent on or staked. If the wallet does not show the token, add it by its contract address rather than by name: Ethereum has plenty of fake tokens with the ENA ticker.
An Ethereum block comes every 12 seconds, and recipients usually wait for a few more confirmations, so crediting ENA takes minutes. Ethereum has no memo: a wallet and an exchange both need only the address.
