Sui (SUI) is a blockchain built on the Move language, where coins and tokens are stored as separate objects. SUI is the network's native coin: it pays for gas and is staked with validators.
SUI is often bought for a new wallet: without it you cannot pay gas, and so cannot send USDC or other tokens on the network, however many sit on the balance.
A Sui address is 0x and 64 hexadecimal characters, 66 in total. It is longer than an Ethereum address (42 characters), so a Sui wallet will not accept an address from EVM networks. Wallets also understand SuiNS names like name.sui, but paste the address itself into the exchange form.
Aptos addresses look exactly the same — 0x and 64 characters — and this is the main source of mistakes. A Sui wallet will accept an Aptos address as a normal one, but the coins will go to an address on Sui that nobody holds the key to. Copy the address only from a Sui wallet.
Gas on Sui is paid in SUI, so the wallet needs a small reserve of coins: without it neither SUI nor tokens can be sent. Staked SUI is kept separately and cannot be transferred until it is withdrawn from staking.
A Sui transaction becomes final in under a second (Mysticeti consensus), so crediting SUI takes seconds. A SUI transfer needs no memo: the address is enough.
