USDT vs USDC: which stablecoin to choose and on which network
USDT vs USDC comes down to where you pay. USDT is bigger (about $184 billion versus $74 billion as of October 5, 2026) and has almost no rival on TRON and P2P platforms. USDC is more transparent about reserves and allowed on regulated EU venues. Here is a point-by-point comparison: issuers, reserves, regulation, freezes, networks and fees.

USDT vs USDC: side-by-side comparison
Both tokens are worth one dollar, each is issued by a single company, and both can be frozen. Where they differ is who stands behind the coin, how reserves are reported, where the token is allowed and which networks it lives on. Snapshot as of October 5, 2026:
| Point | USDT | USDC |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer | Tether, headquartered in El Salvador | Circle, a US public company |
| In circulation | about $184 billion | about $74 billion |
| Share of the stablecoin market | almost 59% | about 24% |
| Reserve reporting | quarterly attestation by BDO | monthly accountant's report |
| Reserve mix | mostly US Treasuries and repo, plus gold and bitcoin | cash, short-term US Treasuries and repo in a BlackRock-managed fund |
| Status in the EU | no MiCA authorization | MiCA license since July 2024 |
| TRON network | main network, about $92.7 billion | issuance stopped in 2024 |
| Freezing | at authorities' request, fast and often | on a court or government order |
In short: USDT is bigger and more widely accepted, especially on TRON, on P2P platforms and in emerging markets. USDC is more transparent in its reporting and is allowed on regulated venues in Europe and the US. Each point is covered in detail below.
Who issues USDT and USDC?
The USDT stablecoin is issued by Tether. The company has been around since 2014 and moved its headquarters to El Salvador in 2025. It promises a dollar of reserves for every USDT and redeems tokens for large verified clients. For the US market, Tether launched a separate token, USAT, in January 2026: it is issued by the US bank Anchorage Digital, while USDT remains the token for the rest of the world.
USDC is issued by Circle, a US company whose shares trade on the stock exchange. In Europe, USDC is issued by its French subsidiary, which holds an e-money license. Both work the same way: a client deposits dollars and receives tokens, returns tokens and gets dollars back. Ordinary holders aren't part of that: they buy stablecoins on an exchange or swap one coin for another through a crypto exchange straight to their own wallet.
How much USDT and USDC is in circulation?
According to DefiLlama, as of October 5, 2026 there are about $313 billion in stablecoins in circulation. USDT accounts for about $184 billion and USDC for about $74 billion. Together that is more than 80% of the market.
USDT has held its lead for years. It reached the market earlier, Asian exchanges adopted it first, and cheap transfers on TRON made it the default dollar for payments. USDC is stronger where regulation and DeFi matter: on Ethereum, Solana, Base and the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid, which holds about $7.4 billion in USDC.
What backs USDT and USDC?
USDT. Tether reports quarterly. The latest BDO attestation, for Q2 2026, came out on July 31. As of June 30, assets stood at $187.75 billion against liabilities of $183.64 billion, leaving a $4.11 billion buffer, half of what it was a quarter earlier. About three quarters of reserves are cash, US Treasuries and repo. The rest are riskier assets: gold (more than 146 tons), bitcoin and loans. An attestation confirms the reserves exist on the report date, but it is not a full audit.
USDC. Circle publishes reserve data every week, and a report from a Big Four accounting firm comes out every month. Almost all reserves sit in the Circle Reserve Fund, an SEC-registered money market fund managed by BlackRock. It holds cash, short-term US Treasuries and repo. The remainder is cash at large banks. No gold, no bitcoin.
For a holder, the difference comes down to this: USDC reserves are easier to verify and hold fewer volatile assets. Tether, on the other hand, keeps a buffer above its liabilities and earns profits that top it up.
How USDT and USDC are regulated: GENIUS Act and MiCA
United States. The GENIUS Act on payment stablecoins was signed on July 18, 2025. It takes effect 120 days after regulators issue final rules, and no later than January 18, 2027. The rules are being finished in 2026: the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) published its proposal in February. Circle, as a US company, is building its business around this law. Tether launched USAT for the US, while USDT is still issued outside the country.
European Union. The MiCA regulation requires a stablecoin issuer to hold a license. Circle got one in France on July 1, 2024, so USDC trades on regulated EU venues. Tether did not apply, and MiCA-licensed platforms removed USDT trading for EEA clients: their transition period ended on July 1, 2026. Holding USDT in your own wallet and sending it is not prohibited by the law. The restriction applies to trading on regulated platforms.
Can USDT and USDC be frozen?
Yes, both. Each token's smart contract has a built-in blacklist: an address on the list can't send coins, though it can still receive them. The difference is how often, and on what grounds, the issuer pulls the lever.
- Tether freezes actively and fast, often at the request of police or regulators, without a court order. The company says it has helped freeze more than $4.9 billion in total. How this works and how to check an address is covered in our breakdown of how Tether froze $550 million in USDT.
- Circle freezes only when directed by authorities or a court. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire repeated this on April 13, 2026, after the Drift exploit, when stolen USDC spent hours moving through bridges to other networks.
The scale differs. AMLBot counted that from 2023 to 2025 Tether froze $3.29 billion across 7,268 addresses, while Circle froze $109 million across 372 addresses. For an honest user, the main risk is the same with both: receiving coins from an address that later lands on the list.
Which networks are USDT and USDC on?
Both tokens are issued on dozens of networks, but they are spread differently. DefiLlama data as of October 5, 2026:
| Network | USDT | USDC |
|---|---|---|
| TRON | about $92.7 billion | leftovers, about $28 million |
| Ethereum | about $73.4 billion | about $45.5 billion |
| BNB Smart Chain | about $9.2 billion | about $1.6 billion |
| Solana | about $2.9 billion | about $7.3 billion |
| Base | none | about $4.4 billion |
| Arbitrum | about $0.9 billion | about $2.3 billion |
The key difference is TRON. Circle stopped issuing USDC on that network on February 20, 2024, and whatever remains there is winding down. If someone pays you on TRON, it is almost always USDT. On Solana and Base it's the other way around: USDC dominates. How to choose a network for USDT itself is covered in our comparison of USDT TRC20, ERC20, BEP20, Solana and TON.
How much does it cost to send USDT and USDC?
The fee is charged by the network, not the issuer, so sending USDT or USDC on the same network costs about the same. Based on our measurements on October 4, 2026:
- TRON: about 6.8 TRX (roughly $2.30) to send USDT to an address that already holds it, and about 13.4 TRX to an empty address. Cheaper with rented energy.
- Ethereum: from a cent to 20–30 cents with gas at 0.1–0.2 gwei. More at peak hours.
- BNB Smart Chain: fractions of a cent.
- Solana: fractions of a cent, plus about $0.25 if the recipient doesn't yet have an account for that token.
So the cheap network for USDC is Solana or BNB Smart Chain, not TRON. If you keep stablecoins on BNB Smart Chain and want to try USDC, you can swap USDT BEP20 to USDC on the same network without paying for a cross-chain move. Each network's fee is paid in its own coin: TRX, ETH, BNB or SOL.
Where is USDT accepted, and where is USDC?
- P2P platforms and cash exchange desks work mostly with USDT TRC20. It is the settlement standard across the CIS, Turkey, Asia and Africa.
- Latin America. According to Brazil's tax authority, USDT makes up 88.7% of stablecoins there and USDC 7.1%. More in our piece on why 98% of crypto purchases in Brazil are stablecoins.
- Europe. On licensed EU venues, USDC is the one of the two that remains.
- The US and payment companies. US exchanges, fintechs and payment networks more often pick USDC. New dollar tokens are growing alongside it, such as the OUSD stablecoin from Visa and Stripe.
- DeFi accepts both, but USDC often has deeper liquidity in lending protocols on Ethereum and Solana.
USDT vs USDC: which stablecoin should you choose?
This is not investment advice: both tokens are worth a dollar, and the choice depends on what you do with them.
- USDT is more convenient if you get paid on TRON, trade P2P or live where USDT is the usual currency for settlements. It is accepted almost everywhere.
- USDC is more convenient if you deal with exchanges and services in the EU or US, use DeFi on Ethereum, Solana or Base, or care more about monthly reporting and a simple reserve mix.
- Splitting savings between two issuers is a sensible habit: a freeze or a problem at one won't hit the whole amount.
If your coins sit on an exchange, that adds a third risk, the risk of the platform itself. Stablecoins on your own address depend only on the issuer and on your seed phrase.
How to swap USDT to USDC without registration
On VertEXchange, USDT is swapped to USDC like any other exchange: no account, email or phone number, and the coins arrive straight at your address.
- Pick a pair. For example, you can exchange USDT TRC20 to USDC on Ethereum: the most common case, when USDT arrived on TRON and you need USDC on Ethereum.
- Enter the amount. The form shows how much USDC you'll receive before you send anything.
- Choose a rate. Floating follows the market; fixed holds the quoted amount for about 15 minutes.
- Paste the receiving address. For USDC on Ethereum it's a 0x address. Make sure the wallet or exchange accepts USDC on exactly that network.
- Send USDT to the deposit address on exactly the network and in exactly the amount shown in the order.
- Wait for the payout. Once the USDC is on its way, the exchange page shows the transaction hash.
The reverse works too: if you need to turn USDC into the stablecoin P2P traders expect, you can convert USDC ERC20 to USDT TRC20. If you hold USDC on Solana, the pair USDC Solana to USDT TRON fits. You don't need a seed phrase or keys to swap, and VertEXchange never asks for them.
FAQ
Which is safer, USDT or USDC?
USDC's reserves are simpler and verified monthly; USDT's are reported quarterly and include gold and bitcoin. On the other hand, Tether holds a buffer above its liabilities: $4.11 billion as of June 30, 2026. Both tokens can be frozen by their issuer.
Can I send USDT to a USDC address?
A 0x address on Ethereum accepts both tokens, but they are different coins: USDT you send arrives as USDT and doesn't turn into USDC. To get USDC, you need a swap.
Is there USDC on TRON?
Practically none. Circle stopped issuing USDC on TRON in February 2024, and about $28 million remains there. On TRON people use USDT, while USDC is held on Ethereum, Solana, Base or BNB Smart Chain.
Is USDT banned in Europe?
Owning and sending USDT is not banned. MiCA-licensed platforms removed it from trading for EEA clients because Tether has no MiCA authorization.
Why isn't USDT worth exactly one dollar?
On exchanges, a stablecoin's price moves by fractions of a cent with supply and demand. The issuer redeems tokens at one dollar, so larger deviations usually disappear quickly.
How much does it cost to swap USDT to USDC?
The total is the network fee for sending plus the cost of the swap. The form shows the amount you'll receive before you send your coins.
Send USDT on TRON and get USDC on Ethereum straight to your 0x address. No registration, email or phone number.
