BNB is the native coin of BNB Chain: it pays the fees on BNB Smart Chain (BSC) and on its layer-2 network, opBNB. It launched in 2017 as the Binance exchange token, and since BNB Beacon Chain was shut down in 2024, its main network is BNB Smart Chain.

BNB is most often bought for gas: without it, USDT BEP20 and other BNB Smart Chain tokens cannot leave the wallet.

BNB's home network is BNB Smart Chain (BSC, token standard BEP20). Its address looks the same as on Ethereum: 0x and 40 hexadecimal characters, case does not matter. The same address also works on opBNB, a layer-2 network on top of BSC where gas is paid in BNB too.

Because the addresses match, the network is easy to mix up: a wallet will accept a 0x address for BSC, opBNB and Ethereum alike. Pick the network on which the recipient expects BNB. Coins sent to your own regular wallet can be reached with the same key on the other network; if the address belongs to an exchange, only its support can return them. On Ethereum, BNB is a separate ERC20 token, and the gas for moving it is paid in ETH, not BNB.

Until late 2024 there was also BNB Beacon Chain — bnb1 addresses and BEP2 tokens, where exchange deposits required a memo. That network is closed. If instructions ask for a bnb1 address or a memo for BNB, they are outdated: on BNB Smart Chain a 0x address is enough.

A BNB Smart Chain block comes every 0.45 seconds (since the Fermi upgrade in January 2026), and a transfer becomes final in about a second. The fee is small but is paid only in BNB: a wallet holding BEP20 tokens and no BNB cannot send anything.

Withdrawing from opBNB to BSC through the official bridge takes 7 days — the challenge period, as on other optimistic rollups. So if you need BNB on BSC and it sits on opBNB, it is simpler to receive it on the right network in the first place.
