About the BNB Smart Chain network

BNB Smart Chain (BSC) is an EVM network: its addresses are the same as on Ethereum, 0x plus 40 hex characters, and its tokens follow BEP20, a standard compatible with ERC20. Fees (gas) are paid in BNB, token transfers included, so BEP20 tokens in a wallet with no BNB cannot be sent.
The main mistake on this network is mixing up BEP20 and ERC20. A 0x address is the same on both, the wallet accepts it, and nothing looks wrong. If USDT BEP20 went to your own wallet when you expected ERC20, they can be found on BSC with the same key — just turn the network on in the wallet. If they went to an exchange that does not support BSC, only its support can help, and not always. opBNB, a separate layer-2 network, uses the same addresses too.
Coins from other blockchains exist on BSC as BEP20 tokens, most often Binance-Peg tokens backed by coins held by Binance. ADA or DOGE on BSC arrive at a 0x address and do not reach their home network on their own: they cannot be sent to a Cardano or Dogecoin address.
The old BNB Beacon Chain, with the BEP2 standard and addresses starting with bnb1, was shut down at the end of 2024. If a guide or wallet offers BEP2, it is out of date. The memo belonged to BEP2; BEP20 has none, and exchanges give each client a separate address.
Since the Fermi upgrade in January 2026, a BSC block comes every 0.45 seconds and fast finality is reached in about a second.
