DAI is a decentralized dollar stablecoin created by MakerDAO; the protocol is now called Sky. There is no issuing bank behind DAI: a smart contract mints it as a loan against crypto collateral, and each such loan is backed by collateral worth more than the DAI issued.
People swap into DAI when they want a dollar token with no address-freeze function, or to move it from Ethereum to an L2 and back.
DAI is created like this: a user locks crypto in a protocol vault and borrows DAI against it. If the collateral price falls below a threshold, the vault is liquidated and the collateral sold, so the DAI in circulation stays backed. Part of the reserve is stablecoins in the PSM module, which swaps DAI for USDC 1:1; that is what keeps the price near a dollar. The DAI contract has no function to freeze addresses.
DAI's home network is Ethereum. On Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and Polygon it arrives through official bridges, on Avalanche it is the DAI.e token, on BNB Smart Chain it is Binance-Peg DAI. Each version has its own contract, and DAI sent on one network will not appear on another. The recipient address is the same on all of them — 0x and 42 characters — so the wallet will not warn you if the network is wrong.
In 2024 Sky launched USDS, an upgraded stablecoin that DAI converts into 1:1 and back. DAI keeps working, but they are different tokens with different contracts: a recipient expecting DAI will not credit USDS, and the other way round. sDAI is a separate token too: DAI deposited at the savings rate, whose value grows over time.
Network fees are paid in the network's coin: ETH on Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism and Base, POL on Polygon, AVAX on Avalanche, BNB on BNB Smart Chain. An Ethereum block comes every 12 seconds, L2 and BNB Smart Chain blocks faster. DAI needs no memo on any of these networks.

USDS is the Sky protocol's newer stablecoin, and DAI converts into it 1:1. They trade at the same price, but their contracts differ, so to a wallet or an exchange they are two different tokens. Send the one the recipient expects.
