Exchange Tether Gold (XAUT)

Tether Gold (XAUT) is a token from Tether backed by physical gold: one XAUT stands for one troy ounce held in London Good Delivery bars stored in Switzerland. The token is divisible to six decimal places, so you can hold a hundredth of an ounce or less.

People usually swap into XAUT to move part of their funds from dollar stablecoins into gold without leaving crypto, and back again when they need USDT liquidity.

XAUT is issued on several blockchains, and on each one it is a separate token. The form offers Ethereum (ERC-20) and BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20), where Tether launched XAUT in March 2026. A token sent on one network will not show up on the other. You may also come across XAUt0, Tether Gold carried to other networks through LayerZero, with its own contracts. The token name does not tell you the network, so match the contract with the one the recipient gave.

On both networks the address looks the same: 0x followed by 40 hex characters, 42 in total. So the address alone does not tell you which network the recipient expects. If Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain get mixed up on a transfer to your own wallet, you can recover the XAUT with the same key by switching the wallet to the other network. If the address belongs to an exchange, only its support can return the tokens, and not always.

The fee for moving XAUT is paid in the network's coin: ETH on Ethereum, BNB on BNB Smart Chain. A common case: XAUT land in a new wallet and cannot be sent on because it holds neither ETH nor BNB.

An XAUT amount is almost always fractional: 0.01 XAUT is a hundredth of an ounce. Count the decimal places, especially when copying an amount by hand. These networks do not use a memo.

An Ethereum block comes every 12 seconds, a BNB Smart Chain block in under a second. The recipient usually waits for a few more confirmations, which takes minutes. As with USDT, the XAUT contract on Ethereum lets Tether freeze an address, for example one tied to sanctions or theft.
