UNI is the governance token of Uniswap, a protocol for swapping tokens through liquidity pools. UNI holders vote on protocol changes and on how its treasury is spent. The token was issued on Ethereum in 2020; on other networks, bridged copies of it circulate.
UNI is often swapped to bring it back from an L2 or BNB Smart Chain to Ethereum: Uniswap governance counts votes only from UNI on the Ethereum network.
Genuine UNI on Ethereum is an ERC-20 token at contract 0x1f9840a85d5af5bf1d1762f925bdaddc4201f984. The Uniswap name and the UNI ticker attract fakes: unsolicited "UNI" shows up in wallets, and lookalike sites offer to "claim an airdrop". Such tokens are worthless, and a transaction approved on a lookalike site can let it take your tokens. Check the contract in a block explorer.
On Arbitrum and Polygon, UNI came over those networks' bridges; on BNB Smart Chain the Binance-Peg version circulates, issued by Binance against UNI on Ethereum. These are different tokens with different contracts, yet the recipient address is the same for all of them — 0x and 42 characters — so a wallet will not warn you about a mixed-up network. On Aptos the address also starts with 0x but is longer: 64 characters after the prefix. Uniswap also has its own network, Unichain, using the same 0x addresses — UNI there is yet another separate token.
UNI gets voting power only after delegation: the holder names, once, the address that receives the votes — it can be their own. UNI that arrives in a new wallet carries no votes until that is done, and delegation is a regular transaction with a fee in ETH. Bridged UNI on other networks does not take part in voting.
The transfer fee is paid in the network's coin: ETH on Ethereum and Arbitrum, POL on Polygon, BNB on BNB Smart Chain, APT on Aptos. An Ethereum block comes every 12 seconds, a Polygon block every 1–2 seconds, an Arbitrum block in under a second.
